A cruisy day despite the uphill, and the Buller Gorge is always a nice place to ride through. I still marvel at the Shag Point cutout that was originally done with hand tools. Got to join the latte set for a while then camped in a more or less official camp area. Mosquitoes! | |

![]() | A tui. There were quite a few around and I could hear them a lot. But getting a photo... not easy. More info Dept of Conservation Tui pages |

![]() | Almost an oxbow at Hawks Crag. |
![]() | Tour bus going through the cut at Hawks Crag (Buller Gorge). Slowly, partly because big trucks use this road too. |
![]() | The cut seen from the side. This was first made by hand to take stagecoaches! |
![]() | Random cycle tourists - they were heading down the gorge. |
![]() | Had a pleasant couple of hours in the shop at Inangahua Junction with a couple of merkins and a canuk. Sat round and chatted while eating until the owner kicked us out so she could close the shop. |
![]() | Czech? guy who didn't speak English at all that I could tell. He had an interesting rack with a mount for a small pack on one side (with the stand under it). Quite cool, but his bike was cheap which is a bit of a contrast to the usual cycle tourists (Germans and merkins for the most part, who tend to have newish expensive toys). |
![]() | A virtually tame bird. This one let me walk right up to it and take photos - the limit was how close I could focus the long lens (1.4m!) |
![]() | A not-quite-so-tame bird. |
![]() | I pitched the hammock inside this shed and spent time inside marvelling at the sheer number of mosquitoes. Cooking dinner was not much fun, I got bitten a lot. The site is an old mining town called Lyell that's long abandoned. |
