OK, yesterday was the 7th, whatever. Today is officially the 8th and I'm on holiday. Woke up fairly late, rode a few kms of gravel to the seal, got to that just in time to see a tandem come whizzing down the Porter's pass road. Took off in pursuit for about 100m, then decided not to bother.

Wandered along, had lunch, got grumpy with the headwind and gentle uphill so stopped at the bealey (a pub). Had dinner, slept.

Hammock in a hayshed near Lake Coleridge. Why risk getting wet when there's a shed ;-)Hammock in a hayshed near Lake Coleridge. Why risk getting wet when there's a shed ;-)
My SPD shoes started to fall apart after only a year of near-continuous use. It's kind of annoying as it's a glue failure and it stops me pulling up on the pedals, which limits hill-climbing and forces me to pedal in an odd way to keep the shoe together. Oh, and it's cold. Fixed them later on using super-glue, but that only lasted a month (and 2000km)My SPD shoes started to fall apart after only a year of near-continuous use. Early morning breakfast stop. Had muesli so it was quick and easy but I still prefer to ride a bit to warm up, then eat. Sat here while the sun rose.Early morning breakfast stop. Had muesli so it was quick and easy but I still prefer to ride a bit to warm up, then eat. Sat here while the sun rose.

See the landscape starting to dry out as I climb, turning to matagouri and tussock. Matagouri is a spiny scrub that's no fun to scramble through, but it does hold the land together. Better than gorse!See the landscape starting to dry out as I climb, turning to matagouri and tussock. Matagouri is a spiny scrub that's no fun to scramble through, but it does hold the land together. The power station appeared to be shut down, and there were lots of people working on the power lines. Made using the road a bit interesting at times, but I had no hassles from the power guys. The DOC idiot going way too fast in the middle of the road (towards me) didn't even slow down as he passed me.The power station appeared to be shut down, and there were lots of people working on the power lines. The (crazy) germans and their tandem. With their trailer helping even I couldn't keep up on the downhills. Christina and Andreas earning the "crazy germans" label. This is their two course lunch break where I had two minute noodles and they had an entree followed by pasta and sauce made on the spot. Their excuse was that they had take-aways last night so this is really an evening meal. I rode with them for a while.Christina and Andreas earning the "crazy Germans" label. Part of the crew shooting "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". A giant fuss and kerfuffle that has taken over a chunk of the area. Keeping many locals employed, however, and entertaining everyone.Part of the crew shooting "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". A giant fuss and kerfuffle that has taken over a chunk of the area. But making access to Cave Stream a tad tricky as there were lots of people around so I didn't want to leave my bike while I explored. But making access to Cave Stream a tad tricky as there were lots of people around so I didn't want to leave my bike while I explored.

Long, straight and into the wind. The South Island is right in the trade winds, so most of the time Aurthur's Pass has a strong wind blowing through it, so naturally I decided to ride against the flow. Looking more like the west coast all the time. Wetter, more trees and a bit more rugged.Looking more like the west coast all the time. Wetter, more trees and a bit more rugged.
