First real day of touring - left Simon's place in Rolleston and headed for the Southren Alps. A chance to find out whether I've acclimatised to Australia's lack of hills as well as the warm weather.

Alpaca farm on the Caterbury Plains. Alapaca are quite popular for fleece, but I like them because they hate dogs.Alpaca farm on the Caterbury Plains. Alapaca are quite popular for fleece, but I like them because they hate dogs.
I poked the camera through the wire to get a better shot, and this alpaca came galloping over to have a look at me. this is the "push shutter button while jumping backwards" shot...I poked the camera through the wire to get a better shot, and this alpaca came galloping over to have a look at me. this is the "push shutter button while jumping backwards" shot...
Leaving Rolleston... the hills are a long way away across the Canterbury plains. Not really flat or big by Australian standards, but the road ends in mountains bigger than anything Australia has. Even though it's mid-summer there's still snow up there.Leaving Rolleston... the hills are a long way away across the Canterbury plains. Interesting house outside Kirwee. I turned off to Lake Coleridge at Kirwee and took the even quieter country backroads for a bit.Interesting house outside Kirwee. I turned off to Lake Coleridge at Kirwee and took the even quieter country backroads for a bit.

Wildflowers from a bridge. The purple flowers are introduced liliac that is spreading along the roadside and causing problems. Unfortunately the "it's pretty" lobby are vociferous in its defence or it would have been declared a noxious weed long ago. See also: possums, trout, gorse etc.Wildflowers from a bridge. The long, straight road complete with nifty tail wind. I could have ridden less by turning right here, but the tailwind and a bit of curiousity took me this way. Big waterpipes leading up to the intake. They go through the hill so it's not actually easy to get to the lake from here.Big water pipes leading up to the intake. They go through the hill so it's not actually easy to get to the lake from here.

The lake! To get here I had to bike up a steep, windy gravel road that fortunately is not heavily used as it's a bit narrow. The lake is pretty. But there was nowhere out of the wind to pitch a hammock that I could find. The lake! To get here I had to bike up a steep, windy gravel road that fortunately is not heavily used as it's a bit narrow.
